Auxetics History |
The first man-made and patented auxetic material, i.e., polyureathane foam with a Poisson's ratio of -0.7, was born in 1987, and a specially-fabricated PTFE resin was found to be auxetic tow years later. Presently some auxetic materials have found commercial applica-tions, but it remains a great challenge for scientists and engineers to synthesize on a molecular level auxetic polymers with high moduli, high strength, and high temperature resistence.

Auxetic materials or auxetics are materials with negative Poisson's ratios --- new types of structural and functional materials having only appeared very recently. They have a characteristic mechanical property of expanding (and/orshrinking) vertically when stretched (and/or compressed) horizontally.

Prof Gaoyuan Wei's Auxetics Researches |
Dr Gaoyuan Wei returned to his motherland from Cambridge University in July of 1992, and formed Auxetics Laboratory within the Polymer Science and Engineering Department, College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, Peking University after his second return to China from Cambridge University in March of 1998. The lab is the first of its kind in China, and is also the birthplace of the scientific concept 'auxegen.' The Auxetics Lab, headed by Prof Gaoyuan Wei, currently has one professor and several researchers, and is engaged in the following research aeras: (1) Auxegens and Auxetic Polymers: Design, Synthesis, Structure and Auxeticity; (2) Polymer -Based Auxetic Composites:Preparation, Structure and Auxeticity; (3) Auxeticity Theory, Modelling of Molecular Auxetics, and Simulation of Auxetic Materials; (4) Applications of Auxetic Materials in Environment Protection (Gas/Liquid Separation), Comfortable Clothing (Cushion), Deep-Water Operation, Space Travel etc.
